How to Choose the Perfect Tile for Your Home

Whether you’re building a new construction home for the first time or you’re experienced, we feel like we’ve it all when it comes to tile and want to pass on some tips we share with our clients. With all the decisions you have to make when building a home, choosing tile should be an enjoyable. Tile can bring out your personal style more than most other selections you’ll make (lighting is a close second).

Go Bold in Small Spaces

A powder room or laundry room are the perfect smaller spaces to go with a bold look. Going bold in larger spaces doesn’t always give you the punch of color you hoped. If your laundry room is a larger space, you can mix a bold tile with a more neutral tile to make the bolder color or pattern less overwhelming.

Choose a Darker Grout in High Traffic Spaces

You’ve seen it before. Grout that was once white that has turned yellow, brown, or even darker. It’s hard to keep white grout white in areas that are constantly used. There are much better cleaning and scrubber options than there used to be, but choosing a gray or sand colored grout can help conceal dirt. Black grout is also an option we see when clients wants a bolder look.

Your Tile Should Reflect Your Personality

Have you always loved coastal blues but aren’t sure if they’ll fit the style of your home. Just because the rest of the home is neutral or one specific style doesn’t mean you can’t choose a color you love to have wow factor in a certain area. If you’re unsure of whether you’ll love it years later, choose a guest bath, laundry or mud room. A simple pattern in a subway tile or 3 inch square could be good options that still pack a punch of color.

Consider Bringing the Floor Tile into The Shower

Create a universal look with marble or porcelain looking marble. If the tile is suitable for the shower walls bring it in and use mosaics on the niches or shower floor to add a different design element that draws the eye.

Choose Accent Tiles Wisely

Accent tiles are the easiest way to add visual interest. The tile you should use will depend on what room it’s going in. If you are taking into consideration future resale value, you may want to keep accent tiles in the kitchen simple and neutral. It’s best to stick within the same color family so if you have a stark white tile, stick with cooler colors. If you have an earthy green, stick with warmer colors.
