Home Remodeling vs. Moving in Asheville

Moving vs. Home Remodeling in Asheville: What is best for you?

Should I stay or should I go?

It’s a common question for today’s homeowners, particularly as the prices of property in Asheville appear to be moving towards a correction.

If you’re starting to feel as though your current home can’t offer you the features, space, or comfort than you need, then a different property might be the way forward. However, there are many challenges with moving that need to be considered. Not only do you have to spend time searching for the right property, but then there’s all the upheaval of moving to deal with too.

Children might need to start a new school; you might have to find a new route to work. The idea of switching houses quickly becomes exhausting.

An alternative option might be to remodel your home until you have the property you’ve always wanted. But how do you decide if remodeling is the right idea?

When to Move to a New Home

There’s no one-size-fits-all strategy to deciding when you should move or remodel your home. The best thing you can do is assess your current circumstances and ask yourself what makes sense. For instance, the best times to move might be:

  • When you’re eager to join a new neighborhood: If you’ve just found a beautiful new neighborhood that you want to be a part of, then a full move is really your only option. You can change a lot about your current house, but you can’t change its location. Moving home gives you a chance to move to an area that makes more sense for you and your family. It could be a place that’s closer to a great school, or near your office.
  • When there’s a lot to change: Dealing with contractors for a few months while you add an extension onto your home isn’t a big deal. However, if you think that you’re going to need to start from scratch to get the property that you want, then it’s going to be cheaper and easier to move. You might even be able to invest in building a new custom home that allows you to design a turnkey solution from the ground up.
  • When you can’t stand living in a construction zone: Ultimately, no matter how small your remodeling job is, it’s going to mean living in a house that’s a bit of a mess. There’s going to be a while where everything is out of place. If you can’t stand the idea of dealing with that, then moving to a different home could save you some stress.

When to Remodel What You Already Have

Remodeling might not seem as exciting as buying a new home at first, but it could be more rewarding and cost-effective in the end. House prices are high, according to the home-price index from Core Logic, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll find the ideal property that you want already available on the market. The best times to remodel are:

  • When simple changes can make a huge difference: Sometimes, a little change, like adding crown molding, updating a powder room, or replacing counter tops can make a huge difference. If a little update is all it takes, there’s no need to move to a new home in Asheville. A home remodel will work just as well.
  • When you love your location: Moving home means giving up your neighborhood. If you love where you live, then that’s the last thing you want to do. Remodeling might require a bit more work at first, but it means you can hold onto the most important thing in real estate – the right location.
  • When you want something unique: If you have specific ideas on how you want your new kitchen or bathroom to look, then moving home isn’t going to give you those outcomes any easier. The more specific your needs are, the more you’re going to need a professional remodeler to bring your ideas to life.

Taking the Right Step with your Home?

Ultimately, only you can decide whether moving or remodeling in Asheville is right for you. With the guidance above, you should be able to see how some situations highlight the values of moving property, while others just require the helpful hand of a remodeling expert.
